There are enough works that eulogize the Great Wall in Chinese history, and among these the poetry of Tang and Song Dynasty are at best. For the first time, the Great Wall Poetry of Tang and Song period was classified and analyzed in this thesis. The classifications and analysis are based on exact statistic data through a certain defined criterion and the authors'emotions and attitudes toward the Great Wall in the poems. From Complete Collection of Tang Poetry and Complete Collection of Song Poetry, I found and classified 433 poems that are connected with the Great Wall. Among these, there are 110 Tang poems and 323 Song poems. In the second part, this essay roughly divides the Great Wall Poetry of Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty into three genres: poetry of objective meanings, poetry that give the Great Wall positive emotions and poetry that give the Great Wall negative emotions. On this, further divides the works into the groups of metaphor, commanding symbol, chant history and melody and etc.In the third part, the essay gives a comparison of the poems of the two dynasties based on the second part. For example, by the comparison between the two groups on the works which take old Yuefu title—Breeding Horses at the Great Wall Pass as title, works of metaphor and works of commanding symbol, we can see that for the Great Wall Poems of Tang Dynasty, the Great Wall is given negative emotions while in these poems of Song Dynasty, it is given positive emotions. The poems of Tang Dynasty are with more critical realism and human considerations while the latter have more symbolic and metaphoric meanings. There are many differences between the two groups. At last, I draw a conclusion: Song poetry emphasizes more about the Great Wall's defense function while the other group has more critical realism. The fourth part searches for the deep reason for this difference. It mainly analyzes the reason by the two dynasties'political environment, cultural environment and the diversity of national status. In addition to this, there are many Tang and Song works that begin a poem by literary quotations of the Great Wall are mentioned in this essay. Such as the literary quotations: Qi Liang wife's bitter weeping, Tan Daoji and Liu Changqing's story concerned with The Great Wall.
