Lawrence was one of the greatest English novelists of the 20th century. He opened up the door to sensuality for countless writers after him. Women in Love was published in 1920, a continuation of The Rainbow, it was, in fact, almost entirely independent of its predecessor. All that was carried over from the previous novel was the Brangwen sisters, Ursula and Gudrun, now in their late twenties. Women in Love was Lawrence's important novel about relations between men and men, and men and women. Lawrence devoted all his life to pursuing an ideal relationship between men and women in his novels. He revealed the sexual love to a high degree of philosophy and aesthetics, along with the strong sex experience. It was his problem to history, politics, religion and society. The World War had great influence on him. He has witnessed the evils and decay brought up by the industrial civilization and the destruction and distortion of human nature in such a social background. He clearly realized that the disasters were given by the western civilization. He believed that there must be something to release the social problems. He acclaimed his "blood consciousness" to make people live a new life. Only in this way could the harmonious sexual relationship between men and women help the distorted civilization and suppressed people regain a new life. The new life that was very important to the people in modern times led people to get rid of the distorted life, in order to pursuit a happy and harmonious life. The main body of my thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter one is the introduction of the thesis. Chapter two illustrates the influences that Lawrence has had from his mother and wife, and the trauma given by the World Warâ…¡. He is clearly aware of the catastrophe and eroded sexual relationship resulting from western civilization, so that he wants to find an ideal and harmonious relation. And chapter three expresses Lawrence's thoughts on blood-consciousness, polarity and his views on the female. The blood-consciousness inspires him to get rid of the old traditional and destroyed industrial civilization into a new world, a harmonious relation. The harmonious relation between men and women is the ideal way to the society and the whole human beings. In chapter four, after describing the relations between Birkin and Hermione, Birkin and Gerald, Gerald and Gudrun, it is not normal and harmonious in their relations, which is not what Lawrence has spent his lifetime exploring. The star-equilibrium relationship between Birkin and Ursula relation is what Lawrence has yearned for, which is explained in chapter five. The last chapter is the conclusion.Women in Love was regarded as one of the great works written by Lawrence. He tried to show an ideal and harmonious relationship between men and women. Unlike Gerald and Gudrun, who went their death, Birkin and Ursula experienced several changes themselves, from misunderstanding to understanding, from mutual exclusion to reception, getting out of the society which was as cold as snow and going to their final harmony.
