James Augustine Aloysius Joyce(2 February 1882-13 January 1941),an Irish writer and poet, is considered to be one of the greatest writers after Shakespeare in the history of English literature. His autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a long novel in which he used stream of consciousness for the first time. Apart from the obvious autobiographical color, abundant stylistic mixture, beautiful characteristic of stream of consciousness and inner focus of writing technique, another important feature is linguistic deviation. Linguistic deviation is departure or violation of the existing language rule system and the creative use of language. Its use in literary works increases literary aesthetical taste, expands aesthetic width and prolongs aesthetic time, with the effect of foregrounding. How to represent the deviation in translation in order to reflect Joyce's style and feelings expressed in the novel and improve the quality of translated version needs translation researchers' endeavor.Divided into three chapters, this thesis discusses various forms of linguistic deviation phenomena and their representation in translation in combination with the linguistic characteristic of the novel, using Geoffrey N. Leech's theory on dividing linguistic deviation3.The first chapter analyzes and compares the phonological deviation phenomena in Portrait such as alliteration, assonance, consonance and homoioteleuton and graphological deviation phenomena from the perspective of the "realization level" of linguistic deviation. The author discusses the characteristic of deviation and its representation in translation and provides her translation, concluding that those linguistic deviation should be preserved in translation and contributes to reflecting the musical and poetical elements of the novel while graphological deviation is conducive to demonstrating characters'thought and the characteristic of stream of consciousness and the representation of those deviation can be realized through rhyme, v+ing etc. The second chapter analyzes and compares the creative use of language, the alternative utilization of Irish dialectal slang and the mixture of various styles in Portrait from the perspective of "form level" of linguistic deviation, namely, "lexical deviation", "dialectal deviation" and "deviation of register". It also discusses the features of each deviation and representation in translation, believing that the "principle of foreignization" should be adopted in translation to preserve the register deviation of original works and transmit the beauty of original novel.,using the deviant Chinese vocabulary to create new words, putting notes to Irish dialect or other means to represent and selecting equivalent vocabulary in different registersThe third chapter studies representation from the deeper "narrative level" of stream of consciousness4, explores and discusses the representation of Joyce's metaphorical deviation, abnormal allocation deviation and narrative deviation. It is believed that the representation of all the three deviations needs emotional analysis of the original works from a broader context and transmits the whole emotion of stream of consciousness with proper Chinese expression after comprehending Joyce's language expression from the context and the whole novel.
