Catch-22, the famous novel written by American novelist Joseph Heller, is regarded as the first and greatest literary work of the American black humor novels. Since its publication, the literary research of the novel has been carried out in China and around the world from various kinds of angles. However, little has been done from the perspective of aesthetics.Due to the fact that the range of aesthetics is hard to define, it is necessary to make a clear clue from it for the interpretation of literary works. Nowadays, with the globalization of the language environment, the research of British & American literature has been extending its way from socio-historic aesthetics, the most basic method, to reception aesthetics and structural aesthetics. Taking this trend as the clue and socio-historic aesthetics, reception aesthetics and structural aesthetics as the theoretical basis, this thesis intends to make a full interpretation to the novel Catch-22 from the perspective of modern aesthetics.Altogether there are five chapters in this thesis. Chapter I is an introduction about the writer Joseph Heller and the novel Catch-22, as well as the main theories applied in the thesis. In Chapterâ…¡, the reality of the novel is analyzed from the socio-historic aesthetic perspective. The purpose is to uncover the fact that the novel, though full of absurdities, is actually a euphemistic reflection of the real situation of American society of postwar ages. In Chapterâ…¢, the deep meaning and textual strategies of the novel are discussed from the perspective of reception aesthetics. In Chapterâ…£, the structural characteristics of the novel are discussed from the perspective of structural aesthetics. Chapterâ…¤is the conclusion of the whole paper. In this chapter, the further relation of the three major parts of this thesis has been pointed out. Besides, some problems that should be taken notice of for the research method applied in this thesis are also pointed out.
