| This dissertation concentrates mainly on the study of the tokens of love in the classic dramas and especially attaches great importance to the origin and background of the token of love as well as its functions in aesthetics and characterization. This dissertation is divided into three chapters.Chapter one, the origin of tokens of love and its classification. Combing through a large number of materials can be traced back to produce tokens of love keepsake of the "Book of Songs" in the "quiet woman whose Luan, Yi-Tong pipe I" and the ancient marriage customs of the "Liu Li" in the "Na sign." An Zhao tokens of love keepsake of the material is divided into six categories:metals, jade type, wood type, paper type and other types of clothing fabric; under the tokens of love keepsake of the gift principal is divided into three categories:the main gift for men, women is presented and the men and women give each subjectChapter two, the value of the tokens of love in works. The aesthetical value of the tokens of love is elaborated from four aspects:one is its beauty and the elaboration of the aesthetical value in structure, which presents the linear beauty and the beauty of dramatic conflicts as well as the beauty of echoes. The linear beauty means the tokens of love are just like the main lines which penetrate the whole text; the beauty of dramatic conflicts, the aesthetical frustration in plots and structure but still reasonable; the beauty of echoes, the functions of the tokens in the beginning and at the end of the text. Secondly, the emotional beauty, the tokens of love are permeated with particles of emotion, they are beauty of freedom, of loyalty, of romance and of ideal. The third is the beauty of its images. The tokens of love are not only beautiful in structure, in emotion, but the images themselves are composed of unspeakable beauty---deep and tender feelings and the beauty of poems and paintings as well as grotesque. The last one is its beauty of implication. The implication of the tokens is of the greatest significance in the text. This dissertation studies the permanence of love from characteristics given by the tokens of love, the implication of love from the images of them. In a word, the tokens of loves are permeated with aesthetical features in drama works.Chapter three, the functions in characterization of the tokens of love. Typical characters in a certain context.
