As the science and technology advance quickly and the internet and multimedia are extensively in use, Multimodality has become an integrate part of everyday life in the world dominated by visual culture. The information communicated not only through the monomodal text but also through the multimodal text such as the audio and video, thus inevitably the researches on the multimodal discourse become a trend. As part of Critical Discourse Analysis, Multimodal Discourse Analysis is explored and probed under the tradition of Systemic Functional Grammar and Social Semiotism. Among these researches, the most representative is the VG (Visual Grammar) set up by Kress & Leeuwen(1996,2006), however, their researches are limited to the static images. O'Halloran (2004) tried to set up a detailed framework of MDA system of movie text and made tentative experiment with two scenes. Baldry &Thibault (2000,2004) also set up a framework for MDA of the advertisement video. The MDA of movie text is considered to be a difficult and complex subject, because it involves not only multiple semiotic modal systems and their interplay, but also the changes of these system in the process of meaning construction under the flow of dynamic text. Therefore, the researches on MDA of movies text make great sense both practically and theoretically.Based on the VG by Kress& Leeuwen (1996,2006), inspired by the framework provided by O'Halloran for the MDA of movie text, This paper has made a MDA of the four shots selected from the movie The Da Vinci Code and the counterpart of the novel by analyzing the constituent frames with the help of the proposed framework of MDA of movie text. And this thesis makes experiments with the subjects as the unit of analysis, common parameters, the dynamic meaning construction and the comparative text meaning. |
