Critical Discourse Analysis, also known as critical text analysis, called CDA for short, is a kind of discourse analysis method founded by Roger Fowler and Gunther Kress, representatives of Western linguists at the late seventies of the twentieth century. CDA is a form of discourse-oriented discourse analysis method, in theory based on Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG). Its main focus is to, through the surface linguistic forms, by examining the public discourse, reveal the impact of ideology on the discourse as well as unveil the reaction of discourse against ideology in the formation of social status, social relations and value systems. In the process of CDA development, the media discourse draws the most concern from critical linguists. Mass media is essential in our everyday life as an important channel to get message and therefore to some extent, directly or indirectly, it influences and even controls people's thoughts. This thesis aims to discuss the concept and principles of critical discourse analysis, explore the dialectical relationship between discourse structure and social ideology embedded in it , as well as its practical application to news discourse especially in the economic news discourse. In this paper, the author, backgrounding against Fairclough's Three-Dimension Model and Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar(SFG) as an analytical framework, carries out a detailed analysis to the news discourse from different news sources, which are all the relevant topic on the issue of China's response to the financial crisis. In this paper, five news reports were respectively selected as samples for analysis from online news reports of the New York Times, Business Week, CNN, Newsweek and the Times which all enjoy high reputation in the world and can represent the general ideological trend of Wetern world.By study, the following conclusions are made: news discourse is not impartial and objective, the language forms and discourse structures are a kind of hybrid product of specific ideology and social structure. China is depicted as autocratic, tyrannical and exaggerated as a potential danger trying to establish world hegemony power on the news reports of China's successful response to the financial crisis either in terms of language policy or with a view of discourse practice, by Western media.Ultimately these discrepancies, embedded in various textual strategies anddiscursive practices, evidently prove that news discourse is up to the underlying ideologies and sociol-cultural contexts. The control of discourse reflects on the manipulation of power and social control, directly or indirectly affect or even assimilate people's ideology. From a theoretical point of view, research results show that the critical discourse analysis is a powerful tool in revealing the relationship between language and ideology. The aim of the present study is to help most English learners cultivate critical language awareness in language learning process, thereby enhancing critical reading skills and alerting their awareness of anti-control of the news media. Finally, it is also expected that this thesis may in a certain extent make contributions to the practial integration of CDA with our daily life and stimulate further research to be undertaken in China. |
