Modern Man's Spiritual Dilemma And Choice

Saul Bellow, a Nobel Prize Winner, is viewed as one of the most prominent figures in contemporary American literature. Modern men's spiritual situation is his key focus. In his masterpiece Herzog, a Nobel Prize novel, Saul Bellow describes modern men's predicaments and dilemma and tries to find solutions to their problems. Saul Bellow and his works have been studied and reviewed much by scholars outside China. Chinese scholars haven't paid enough attention to Saul Bellow and his works. As for his masterpiece Herzog, it is not well studied though some Chinese scholars dedicate their efforts to it. Though the theme of Herzog is a clear mirror in which we can see and understand Saul Bellow and his Herzog, only a few Chinese scholars have made efforts to it. My thesis intends to explore the theme of Saul Bellow's masterpiece Herzog under the title "Modern Man's Spiritual Dilemma and Choice: Study on the Theme of Saul Bellow's Masterpiece Herzog, thus having a deep understanding of modern men's spiritual predicaments and dilemma depicted by Saul Bellow. The following aspects in Herzog will be studied and analyzed:1) analysis on Herzog's spiritual dilemma; 2) analysis on Herzog's search for salvation; 3) cultural influence on Herzog's salvation. Through the theme research, I aim to make a contribution to people's profound understanding of Saul Bellow, a great Jewish writer who plays an important role in American literature.
