The present thesis studies the politeness phenomenon in Tiger Talk to analyze how the main politeness strategies and linguistic means are applied in this program.The study takes B&L's face management as the theoretical framework and Tiger Talk on Phoenix Satellite Television as the data. The present research attempts to seek out what politeness strategies and what linguistic means are applied in Tiger Talk. The author also wants to find if there are any similarities and differences between debaters and Tiger's talkThe thesis begins with a simple introduction which includes the rationale, objective and significance of the study. In the literature review part, the author introduces the studies on Debate, the politeness strategies and relevant politeness theories. In the methodology and data part, the author gives B&L's politeness framework and analytical procedures. In the main body of the thesis, a detailed description of the application of the politeness strategies and its linguistic means in Tiger Talk are given by the author.Through a detailed analysis, the author finds that four politeness strategies are widely used in TV Debate which are bald on record politeness strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy and off record politeness strategy, and the negative politeness strategy is most favored by debaters and Tiger. Its'also found that 17 linguistic means are employed by debaters and Tiger in debate, some of which come directly from B&L's politeness strategy model and some of which come from the reorganization of B&L's model and Chinese Culture by the author. Besides, the study shows that there are similarities and differences about the linguistic means use between debaters and Tiger. Both debaters and Tiger will be for some linguistic means and some other linguistic means are seldom used by them. Debaters and Tiger will also have their own preferences for the different linguistic means employment to express themselves in the debate.The present study is an attempt to explore the application of the politeness strategies in Tiger Talk. It may help to get a deeper understanding of the politeness strategies in the pragmatic field from the viewpoint of Debate. The study may also shed light on future studies on Debate languages from the perspective of the politeness strategies in the pragmatic field, and which assists debaters to gain some insight into the nature of debating languages and techniques. The present thesis is both helpful in The present thesis may make contributions to the studies in both the linguistic field and at the practical level.
