The Original Purpose And Dilemma Of The Chinese Work-Study Movement In France 1919-1921

This study intends to clarify the development, reveal the original purpose and analysis the dilemma of the Chinese Work-Study Movement in France from 1912 to 1921. The movement went through three stages. In 1917, students from middle and lower class began to join the program. They hoped western knowledge could change their destiny and save the nation. The duality of their original purpose of overseas study confronted the economic depression in France. With the difficulties in language and technical study, students desperately found they failed to manage livelihood and study in France. The work-study theory encountered adversity; the movement failed to accomplish its intended result.
