Flannery O'Connor, the representative of the post-war American Southern literature, has presented the distortion and collapse of modern life and longed for the return of belief of God which could save the modern painful sinners from suffering which was resulted by the further development of industrialization and the loss of belief in modern time.This paper is based on the important short stories by Flannery O'Connor, and the writer of this thesis tends to analyze how Flannery O'Connor succeeded in revealing the importance of the modern man's regaining of Christian belief and acceptance of"Grace"in the perspective of narrative techniques with the emotional distance between the character and the reader as the frame of reference, to explore the changes of emotional distance on the effects of a better expression of the writer. There are three chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is equipped with a general introduction on the three narrative techniques,the narrator, characterization and speech representation included, and the emotional distance as the frame of reference. In the second and third chapters, the writer will have a brief analysis in the aspects of narrator, characterization and speech representation respectively with the emotional distance working as the instrument.
