Saul Bellow (Saul Bellow,1915-2005)is one of the most representative figures in modern American literature,one of the most important novelists after Hemingway and Faulkner. In 1976,he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his understanding and subtle analysis of contemporary culture of human."Dangling Man" and "Herzog" are the most representative novels of Saul Bellow's works of spirit vagrant mode.The heroes of these two novels are the kind man of social exclusion,alienation, isolation, and spiritual lonely. They are called "dangling people."This paper attempts to study those two novels that are closely linked to and are Saul Bellow's works of his different phases,to explore the differences and evolution of the Jewish nature,alienation themes and writing techniques in "Dangling Man" and "Herzog".There are three chapters in the body of this paper.Chapter I The Jewishness of Two Works.This chapter studies the Jewish prototype,Jewish motifs and Jewish ethics of the "Dangling Man" and "Herzog" from the particularity of the Jewish people and their cultural roots.Then this chapter compared the evolution and causes of the Jewish nature in the two works, the Jewish nature in "Dangling Man" present locally and surface,and that in "Herzog" is a more subtle way Chapter II The Alienation Theme of Two Works.This chapter first analyzes the alienation theme of the two works,and then discuss their different regression models.The regression approach of "Dangling Man" is a compromise to the reality, that of "Herzog" is to actively adapt to reality and trying to transform the reality.Chapter III The Unique Narrative Approach.This chapter analyzes the diary of "Dangling Man" and the epistolary style of "Herzog". Saul Bellow has explored to find the appropriate way to reflect the theme,to reveal the inner activity of character. Diary and epistolary of these two distinct narrative methods gived two protagonists the most appropriate form to find the nature of life. Bellow achieved extraordinary literature results and formed unique artistic style by using these two autobiographical methods.
