People use language to interact with others, to establish and maintain relationship withothers, to express their attitude or judgment on the world around, to influence others'behaviorsand to change others'minds. This is the interpersonal metafunction of language. Up to now, interpersonal meaning in different discourses has been touched upon by many scholars at homeand abroad from different perspectives. But studying the realization of interpersonal meaningfrom the perspective of a deeply extended systemic functional grammar is weak and rare. Therewill be greatly significant to make a contrastive study of the realization of interpersonal meaningin both Chinese and English languages.Such a kind of discourse, job advertisements on the Internet, plays an important role in ourdaily life nowadays in that with the development of advanced media technology, recruitingthrough the Internet has become a reality, which makes the world become smaller and closer. The author collects 30 Chinese and 30 English job advertisements from two famous recruitingwebsites respectively to make a contrastive study of the realization of interpersonal meaning inChinese and English job advertisements on the Internet in terms of mood, modality, tense andperson system from the perspective of systemic functional grammar.Through detailed analysis, the present thesis reveals how the recruiters successfully realizethe interpersonal meaning in job advertisements on the Internet by employing different linguisticresources and shares us with similarities and distinctions between Chinese and English jobadvertisements on the Internet in terms of the realization of interpersonal meaning. To be specific, similarities can be shown by frequent employment of declarative mood, modal auxiliaries, present tense and various person pronouns, especially a large number of first person pronouns.Distinctions are also very outstanding: 1) Imperatives and interrogatives are much moreemployed in English job advertisements on the Internet than those in Chinese to realize theinterpersonal meaning. Exclamative mood is Chinese recruiters'preference. 2) Except for largequantity of median value modality, interpersonal metaphor of modality is frequently employed inEnglish job advertisements on the Internet, while low value modality is Chinese recruiters'preference. 3) The present tense is the preference of the writers of English job advertisements onthe Internet, while Chinese recruiters employ a large amount of the past tense. 4) Alarge number of proper names are employed in Chinese job advertisements on the Internet. besides, the politeform您referring to the job hunters appears to show politeness and respect. While in Englishjob advertisements on the Internet, you is the only form to refer to the job hunters.Based on systemic functional grammar, it is noticed that communication with language isclosely related to social-cultural factors, which means that cultural factors would have greatimpact on the realization of interpersonal meaning. This thesis also makes an explanation of thecultural influences upon the different realization of interpersonal meaning in Chinese andEnglish job advertisements on the Internet.
