The Monographs Of Jin Ping Mei's Comic Description

As the first novel of society mainly describing the domesticity in ancient China,"Jin Ping Mei"also has a large amount of comic contents. When we summarize and research the comic elements of"Jin Ping Mei"in the wider view, we can say this novel holds all characters that a successful comic work shall have: the interesting descriptive language and the flexible rhetorical devices; the strong comic characteristics in many plots and the main characters'many funny elements; even most of the quoted texts inserted into the novel are the jokes and the jokey prologues. However, when the scholars researched the novel, they used to emphasize on analyzing the pity experience of"fast flourishing and short lasting"of the described feudal merchant's family and the sad ending that the main character was dead, gold faded and the vase broken; and ignored the large amount of comic elements of the novel. Agreeing on the social significance and the artistic value of the tragic description of"Jin Ping Mei", this paper pays more attention to the comic description's image describing, plot structuring, characterization and other unique art features, as well as their literary and artistic functions.The paper analyzes the characteristics of comic description of"Jin Ping Mei"in views of plots, characters, language and quoted texts, while it grasps the novel's theme at the macroscopic level. It believes"Jin Ping Mei"has described the classic characters with apparent comedy characteristics, such as Count Ying, who are qualified to be demonstrated in the characters'gallery of the world literature; adopted a lot of vivid, witty and humorous descriptive language; designed various plots with strong irony and teasing features; and quoted a large quantity of jokes and comic skits which are wisecracks themselves. All of those are the characteristics that a successful comic work shall have.The key of this paper mainly discusses and analyzes the literary and artistic functions of the comic description of"Jin Ping Mei": a. through the vivid comic plots and the lively comic language, the novel has set up the characters with unique personalities and profound meanings; b. a large quantity of original life details, dialects and cartoon-like humorous plots successfully quoted in the novel have enriched the content and the interestingness, when separation, concatenation and communication of literature and reality has largely developed the space for Chinese comic description; c. a large volume of the antilogical but paradoxical plots and the biting critical language have satirized the dark world, manifested the purpose of the work, criticized the creation paradigm of traditional literature, and reflected the principles of literary creation; d. the novel has used a lot of comic description to vertically and horizontally operate the description, in order to create the obvious or hidden ambiguous predictions and the cognitive contexts that are hard to understand; and it also implied the development of the story and enhanced the narrative function by using versatile narrative skills with comic elements.At the same time, this paper also analyzes the historical background of the comic description of"Jin Ping Mei", and believes that the reason the novel has used so much comic description in proficient manner is closely related to the social climate of"wealth for indulgence", the dissipated and unrestrained spirit of literary creation and the philosophy of"carpe diem"in the late Ming Dynasty. Besides, this part also discusses the significance and defects of the comic description of"Jin Ping Mei", and thinks the comic description is in different forms and methods but is of strong reality and value of historical data; and such description intensifies the theme of the story, extends the comic concept and has profound influence on later literature. There are blunt plots and vulgar language in the novel, yet the significance of the description can never be underestimated.
