With the rapid development of world economy and speeding up of economic globalization, it becomes increasingly necessary for the manufacturers to probe into the foreign markets, which further results into higher frequency of international business negotiations. Due to the involved parties'different cultural backgrounds, social beliefs, personalities and etc, it is inevitable for them to commit some mistakes which are also called pragmatic failures by Jenny Thomas. The pragmatic failures can do harm to the negotiations more or less which have attracted many scholars to make study on them. It is Jenny Thomas that firstly defined the notion of pragmatic failures and divided them into two categories, pragmalinguistic failures and sociopragmatic failures. Later, many researches have been made into the causes and solutions for the pragmatic failures both at home and abroad. However, Most of the perspectives of their researches have been confined into the cross-cultural communication. What is more, few researches have tackled on the pragmatic failures in the international business negotiations.Based on Jenny Thomas'theory on pragmatic failures, this paper makes a study into the failures in the international business negotiation. The pragmatic failures have been described, classified and analyzed according to the pragmatic failure theory. Then the causes of the pragmatic failures have been analyzed by adopting Jef Verschueren's Adaptation theory. Lastly, the solutions for avoiding the pragmatic failures in the international business negotiation have been discussed. This paper is a try to analyze the pragmatic failures in the international business negotiations and also the sovlving measures have been explored, which is expected to make contributions to the development of the future international business negotiations.
