An Analysis Of Conversations In Howards End On The Basis Of Politeness Principle

Politeness is not only a symbol of human civilization but also a human behavior in daily life. It plays an important role in maintaining friendly interpersonal relationships. Politeness has a great influence on successful human communication. Many scholars and linguists home and abroad have done a large amount of research into politeness phenomenon from different perspectives. For example, they applied Politeness Principles to teach in classes, and to research conversational implicature, etc., while analyzing the conversations on the basis of Politeness Principle in certain novels has not been greatly attended to.This paper attempts to make its exploration on conversations from Howards End written by an English writer Forster under the framework of Politeness Principle proposed by Leech. Meanwhile, the thesis points out that politeness has closely connection with context as an effective communicative method. The paper takes altogether 41 conversations collected from Howards End for the classification and analysis of Politeness Principle by adopting mainly descriptive methods. This paper mainly makes an analysis of conversations in Howards End under Politeness Principle from two aspects. On the one hand, conversations adhere to maxims; on the other hand, conversations violate maxims. It also researches the reasons why there are some conversations violating maxims from the view of context.By making an analysis of conversations based on Politeness Principle in Howards End, the thesis proves functions and significance of Politeness Principle in creating and appreciating literature works for one thing; for another, it fully demonstrates the effectiveness of Politeness Principle applied to analyze specific works; in addition, it deeply discloses pragmatic rules from linguistic level. These all contribute for readers to understand Howards End further, and help to make sense of the laws of creating novels.
