As an important part of people's daily life and entertainment, sports have a long history in both Western countries and China. Moreover, the Beijing Olympic Games made sports a hot topic of people. Almost all the famous news papers around the world have sport editions to especially report sports news. From the perspective of critical discourse analysis, the author studies twelve pieces of news reports on the main events of Beijing Olympic Games from different countries, aiming to reveal the hidden ideologies behind the sports news.Critical discourse analysis is an approach of discourse analysis born in early 1980s in Britain. CDA aims to study the ideological meaning behind the linguistic structures through taking both linguistic characteristics of discourse and its social-cultural background into consideration. This paper follows Fairclough's Three-Dimensional Framework and adopts the analytical tools from Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar, providing a description of linguistic features of discourse first, and then trying to make an interpretation of these features and at last in considering the social-cultural background of discourse, giving an explanation of these linguistic options.Through a comparative study of samples, the author comes to the conclusion: sports news reflects as well as influence people's ideologies and attitudes, confirming the idea of critical linguistics that language is not only a reflection of society, but it also constructs social realities and relationships. This study also helps to enhance our critical sense in reading, and leading to a better understanding of news reports.
