The Creative Style Development Of The May Poem League In Singapore

Being one of Singapore's contemporary colleagues for the modern poets, the May PoetrySociety has made an outstanding contribution for the promotion, prosperity of Singapore and theart of poetry ever since its inception. The May poetry has rich connotations, including realizationof the traditional culture, cares of the reality, society, and life. Meanwhile their works showwestern techniques of modern poetry and embody a unique aesthetic taste, which are ofextremely important research value.Every era has a literature of its own. May poetry varies with the times in terms of creationstyles. While sorting out the basic information of the May poetry, the thesis focuses its attentionon combing creation style varieties of May poetry in differing ages.There are four chapters in this thesis, including introduction, main body, conclusion andappendix. The first chapter is an overall introduction of this thesis and the May Poetry Society;the appendix complements the members of these societies biography and other information; Therest chapters will explore respectively the creative styles of the May poetry within three periods,namely the sixties to the mid-seventies in the 20th century, the mid-seventies to mid eighties inthe 20th century, and since the mid-eighties.Although the May Poetry Society was established in 1978, but the first generation of Maypoets had made its first appearance as early as 1960s. During this period, their creation themesare mainly characterized as self-indulgence and spiritual alienation from the external world.They pursue modern art of poetry and artistically learn from Western art theory. And modernismappears as the general creative styles in their poetry.With the convergence of the trends of modern and reality in the 1970s in Singapore Poetry,the May, combining situations within the country, transfer to the locals and life and fill theirpoetic writings with realism, humanistic care, and also deep emotions. The realism in theirpoems of this period is largely represented in two spiritual demensions of the motherlandSingapore and the imagination of the local culture.By the 1980s, especially since the late eighties, economic prosper drives Singapore into thepost-industrial society. The country's literature presents a diversitification tendency along which the care of trivial life becomes an important flow of the May poetry at this stage.
