In recent years, the teaching of culture has become a hot topic and has receivedincreasing attention, but the current situation of culture teaching in CET is not satisfying:students still cannot communicate appropriately with the native speakers although they have agood command of vocabulary and grammatical rules; students are still often criticized aspersons with empty minds although they are excellent in English proficiency, because whatthey are good at is only imitating, not creating, both of which may result from the lack ofcommunicative skills and culture awareness. At the same time, the concepts of life-long learning and autonomous learning are greatlyadvocated. People who want to learn something definitely want to learn constantly andindependently, that is whenever and wherever they want. And fortunately, with the rapiddevelopment of internet and the building of Net-based Language Teaching (NBLT), theirexpectations come true. This thesis focuses on the exploration of an effective teaching model to improve thequality of culture teaching, to arouse students'interest in learning culture, and to improvestudents'international communicative competence and their autonomous learning. So at first, the thesis has made a deep study and analysis on the current situations of culture teaching inCET. One hundred non-English majors and twenty English teachers from China University ofPetroleum have done the questionnaire, through which a new culture teaching model has beenintroduced, that is cultural experience teaching under the net-based environment. In order totest whether this model is effective or not, an experiment has been done. Two classes of non-English majors are involved in the experiment: one as the experimental group which isinstructed with the new model; the other as the control group taught with the traditionalteaching model. Both Sociocultural pre-test and post-test are conducted in the two groups. After three months'experiment, communicative skills and cultural awareness of the studentsfrom the experimental group are obviously better than the control group. It indicates that thenew model is effective and applicable in culture teaching, and it also proves that the new modelcan also improve students'interest in English language learning.
