In performing classic concerto, especially those whose composers didn't specify the cadenza for performers, it is an arduous task for most performers to choose cadenza in order to express and deepen his or her understanding of the work and better embody it, in addition to boasting the performer's technique. Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major is the most representative among all the classic concerto which many performers and composers created cadenza for. Through practicing this concerto, I conduct in-depth study about the cadenza of it and hope to summarize my thoughts and learning from the study. In this essay, I sort and compare several editions of the cadenza that I have collected. And I wish this would provide some help to the violin performers in choosing the cadenza. The first part of this essay simply illustrates the definition of cadenza and the profound meaning in its creation. The second part is the collection and comparison of various editions of Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major from which readers could have more comprehensive knowledge about its cadenza.25 versions are displayed for better grasp of style and understanding of the work in the practical performance and aesthetic contrast. In the third part, I recommend four versions for reference based on the aspects such as style, technique and content. I also briefly introduce the situations of selection when renowned violinists recorded this concerto, which could be referred by performers in choosing which version. In the appendix, I attach several audio editions of Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Major, which is considered representative from my point of view. These attachments may be attractive to readers who share the interests.
