| News language is a hot topic at present. With the research on news language deep going, the news commentary language also attracts attention. News commentary language belongs to news language, thus the study on news commentary language is always included in the news language study. After an overall survey of former researches on news language, we can find that researches are mainly carried out from two aspects, one is from the aspect of journalism, and the other is from a linguistic perspective. Journalism studies the news commentary language from the point of news writing and news appreciation. While the linguistics aspect combined with the pragmatic theory mainly researches on news discourse and news language features. Nevertheless, here is little research work done on news commentary discourse. Under such a background, this research will study news commentary pragmatic markers within the theoretical framework of engagement resource, comprehensively revealing language features of commentary pragmatic markers in news commentaries. The present study can increase people's rational knowledge and raise their connoisseurship. Meanwhile, it can guide reading and writing. Furthermore, it is a complement for pragmatic research by applying pragmatic theory into the news commentary research.According to Fraster's division of commentary pragmatic markers, the writer also makes this research on the theoretical basis of the engagement system in appraisal theory. This research discusses the distribution and function of commentary markers in news commentaries. The writer chooses the online version of three main newspapers in western countries, that is TIMES, NEWSWEEK, NEWYORK TIMES. The thesis is mainly focused on commentary pragmatic markers in new commentaries; the distribution pattern; engagement resource types of the commentary pragmatic markers; the features of dialogue potential revealed by the markers, and the significance to the meaning expression.The following findings can be obtained through analysis: all types of commentary pragmatic markers occur in the data. The only difference is the frequency of occurrence of different types. Among them, assessment markers appear the most frequently, they take up 51.15%, and the second are emphasis markers, they account for 23.28%. The distribution pattern of commentary pragmatic markers follows the order of sentence initial, sentence medial and sentence end, the possible reason is that commentary pragmatic markers usually work as parenthesis in discourse to express the author's viewpoint. From engagement aspect, the commentary pragmatic markers of"disclaim"and"proclaim"are more often used than"entertain"and"attribute". From"heterogloss"aspect, the use of"contract"is more than"expand".
