Based on the analysis of a sample of 13 mainland China's contemporary textbooks on music teaching theory, this paper objectively reviews the development of this academic discipline, and summarizes its development characteristics, hoping to give inspirations on the promotion of the construction of the discipline and of the building of teaching materials in this subject, through borrow and absorb the fulfilled achievements, find and reveal the existed problems in this area.The paper consists of six parts: an introduction followed by four subsequent chapters and an independent chapter of conclusions and discussions. The origin of the problem, the object and methodology of my research, and the goal of the paper are discussed in the introduction, in addition to an overview of relevant research literature. The first chapter discusses the development status of music teaching theory textbooks used in schools of mainland China. The second chapter mainly analysis a sample of 13 mainland China's contemporary textbooks on music teaching theory. The analysis in this chapter goes from contents to editorial board of these textbooks, then to suitable readers and theoretical style, etc. My interviews with six authors of mainland China's music teaching theory textbooks are included in the third chapter. Four understandings and five suggestions based on my previous analyses are put forward in chapter four. As is mentioned before, the final chapter includes conclusions and discussions.The research methodology utilized in this paper includes: literature application, comparison, analyses and interview. To say more concretely, this paper studies the literature on music teaching theory, analysis a sample of contemporary textbooks on music teaching theory, compare differences of different textbooks from local focus, and analysis the development status of these textbooks from a global view. The analysis is strengthened with my interview with several authors of these textbooks, and suggestions are prompted to reconstruct the textbooks on music teaching theory.The significance of the research is to put forward suggestions on the compilation of textbooks on music teaching theory, to promote the development of teaching materials in this discipline, to give advisory opinions for teachers and students to choose from these textbooks, and to contribute to the healthful development of textbook construction in this discipline.
