The United States is the only Superpower in the world of today and no countries can keep pace with it in the field of economy, military, science, soft power, etc. So the adjusting of its National Security Strategy after the Cold War will have effect on the situation of the world and the international relations. My focus is on whether the National Security Strategy has been adjusted and which major adjustment has been made.More than ten years ago, the dramatic transformation of world politics resulting from the dissolution of the Soviet Union made the United States of America become the Superpower. But it didn't satisfy the United States. On the other hand, this superior situation impelled the strategist and the policymakers of the nation to review the present security environment and adjust the strategy of the Cold War. Moreover, they must adapt the National Security Strategy to the changed situation. They wanted to let the " long梩erm peace" resulting from the confrontation between the Unite States and the Soviet Union continue under the leading of the United States through new strategic cooperation. After the Cold War, the international security environment changed essentially. Although the menace in the past disappeared because of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a great deal of new menace sprang up quietly and extended quickly, Such as the invasion of the "rogue state" to the American friends, rising of the regional countries, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction , spreading unchecked of the terrorism and infiltration of the international crime and"non-government power" to the international security affairs. Inorder to solve this new problem, the United States is imperative to adjust its National Security Strategy. In the late 1990s, the National Security Strategy-Engagement Strategy evoked heated dispute. Realism is staging a comeback and guiding the formulation of the strategy. So with the coming out of the Report of the Quadrennial Defense Review in 2001, the security of the government were different from that of the Engagement Strategy. The 9 ?11 incident made the government combine the fighting against the terrorism with the changing of the strategy. The National Security Strategy in September in 2002 was different from that at the end of the last century. So the structure and the main content of this thesis are: the full text is divided into four parts. The First part, the National Security Strategy of president George Bush:from the "Containment Strategy" to the" Beyond Containment Strategy " .It was the beginning of theadjustment of the National Security Strategy after the Cold War. The second part, National Security Strategy of president Clinton: from the" Containment Strategy " to the " Engagement and Enlargement Strategy" .It enriched the content and laid a foundation for the strategy after the Cold War. The third part, the National Security Strategy was stamped with the brand of the "Pre-emptive Strategy" of president George W .Bush . The forth part, the reflection on the adjustment of the National Security Strategy of the United States after the Cold War. I think that the sequence of ideas of the NationalSecurity Strategy of the United States is becoming clearer and clearer. The aim of the United States is to use its powerful strength to construct a unipolar world where the United States will own absolute predominance.
