Since the Reform and Opening of China, with the consumption level of Chinese improved from day to day, the demand for livestock products has had a large increase. As a result, the livestock industry in China has grown up very fast. However, such a growth is unreasonable to a certain extent, with the suplus of structural and regional supply. Internationally, even after China entering WTO, domestic livestock products still face export barrier due to the fact that quality and sanitation situation cannot match the international standard. To adapt the interational and national environment, livestock industry in China should develop intensively. The growth scale and quality should be emphasized equally. For realizing such objectives, we should first know the current growth pattern of China's livestock industry. It is meaningful for the future development of Chinese livestock industry to analyze the factors that influence livestock growth in recent years econometrically, especially technical change and technological efficiency, and conclude the rule of Chinese livestock growth.In this paper, we first analyze the input and output as well as cost-benefit rate of Chinese livestock industry by the example of hog, beef, mutton and dairy cow. Then, we choose the samples from different regions in different time, use the stochastic production frontier suggested by Battese and Coelli (1992), which is aimed at the panel data (balanced or unbalanced), and make the econometric analysis for the growth of hog, beef, mutton, and dairy cow. Different from the former research for livestock industry, the efficiency measurement theory is introdiced into the growth model and the TFP is dissolved into technical advancement, technological efficiency and residual, the TRANSLOG production function is used to make the estimation more precised. By these methods, the Solow growth equation is improved and the current growth pattern of Chinese livestock industry is analyzed more profoundly.Through certain statistical and econometric analysis, we arrive the following results:1. The factor inputs still accounts for the major part in livestock production growth, about 60%; the contribution of TFP improvement is lower than that of factor input growth. Therefore, the livestock industry is still in extensive growth.pattern.2. The contributions of technical advancement and technological efficiency are still low in livestock production growth.3. The efficiency for technology application in livestock production in middle and east China is comparatively high while that in west China is comparatively low. However, the technological efficiency in west China has been increased fast in recent years.4. There are still problems such as low transforming rate of feedgrain, unsound vetrenarian service and market circulation system in livestock industry growth.Based on the above conclusion, the polcy implications are as follows:1. It is necessary to enhance the technical innovation and expansion, improve the efficiency of technology application and accelerate the transfer of livestock industry to intensive growth.2. The government should take measures to strengthen the support for livestock industryin west China and improve the establishment for livestock breeding; for middle and east China, the industrilization of livestock industry should be emphasized. In a word, livestock industry should be developed according to the regional situation.3. The circulation and information system for livestock products should be completed so that the small-scale farmers can adapt to the market change and improve their ability to defence risk.
