| Urbanization, also known as townization, is a historical process of Hunan production and life-style moving from countryside to cities, which is an inevitable outcome of social economy development, especially of modern industrialization. The result of the process manifests that the proportion of urban population is growing in the total population of society, and cities are developing and becoming perfect. By means of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the urbanization level and urbanization development object in 2005, 2010, 2020 are predicted and the present development pattern of urbanization as well as the supporting economical and institutional factors sustaining the future development of urbanization are also put forward based on the analysis of historical course and present characteristics of urbanization, and the related social economy factors affecting the course of urbanization together with the inquiry of issues concerning urbanization. The article can be divided into nine parts as follows:1. The significance of the research and the present state of research both at home and abroad. In this part, the theoretical and practical significance of the research are briefly introduced, besides, the history and development trend of urbanization study both in China and abroad are also summarized.2. A survey of urbanization development both at home and abroad. This part gives a brief account of internal and external course and trend of urbanization development, and makes an analysis of the influence of economy globalization and informationization on the urbanization course of Hunan.3. Urbanization process of Hunan and present characteristics. After experiencing a long tortuous process, the urbanization of Hunan has been developing rather quickly in recent years, but there are still some problems in it including low urbanization quality, low degree of city primacy, unbalanced development of urbanization, unitary fund-collecting channel for city construction and the lack of necessary construction fund for city development.4. The correlation analysis between urbanization of Hunan and social economy development. There are significant positive correlations between urbanization level and GDP, industrializa -tion, farming industrialization and informationization.5.The prediction of urbanization trend of Hunan and its object system. By applying models of Time-sequence, Logarithmic models, and Multivariate Stepwise Regression analysis, along with combining realistic situation in Hunan, development object of Hunan urbanization is put forward.6. The analysis of Hunan urbanization motive power mechanism. This part analyzes motive power of Hunan urbanization development from the four aspects: the increase of rural productivity, rapid growth of rural population, the driving of comparative interests and urban economy.7. The Exploration of the issues concerning urbanization. The first issue touches on whether urbanization can become development strategy for expanding domestic demand and form a new economy development point. The second one deals with the status and function of small towns in the course of Hunan urbanization.8.The selection of the smooth road to Hunan urbanization. At present Hunan province should take the development road of "highlighting the two ends, extending the middle" , whichconsequently makes urbanization on a healthy and right track. 9. The sustainment of economy and system to urbanization of Hunan. This chapter elaborates the innovation of sustaining system in economic and institutional aspects, which are necessary to speed up the course of Hunan urbanization.The aim and significance to study the course of Hunan urbanization lie in finding out a suitable urbanization road to Hunan by exploring and analyzing the urbanization law both at home and abroad, and drawing on experience and lessons from internal and external urbanization based on studying the historical process and present state of Hunan urbanization and social economy.
