Forest tourism, which started in 1980's, is a totally new business with a bright future. Using the natural landscape, peculiar forest environment and ecological functions of forests as a basis, forest tourism can provide people with an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of nature, benefit from ecological environment, learn more about the nature and ecology, and enhance their awareness about ecological environment protection.Forest tourism is a good way to make effective use of forest resources ecologically, socially and economically. It can facilitate the coordinated ecological and economic development and improve the relationship between man and nature. Its development needs long-term and sustained efforts. To guarantee its stable and healthy development, strategies and countermeasures must be formulated to deal with the issues and problems occurred in the process.This paper has made an analysis on the relationship between basic sciences and forest resources, origin and development of forest tourism both at home and abroad, its features and distribution, and summarized its achievement and lessons gained in the course of development. This paper has also probed into its development trends and the ways to push forest tourism further ahead. In this paper, some descriptions are also presented on forest parks, nature reserves and famous scenic spots in China, and, at the same time, some operable measures are put forward for tourism areas planning, management schemes and business promotion. Additionally, forest tourism is of great significance in solving the resources crisis and economic problems faced by the traditional forestry, facilitating the readjustment of the structure of forest industry and benefiting the reform of the state-owned forest farms. Its development will be inevitably conducive to forest resources and biodiversity conservation and the harmonious existence of human beings and nature.The paper is comprised of the following parts: Contents of Forest TourismIn this section, analysis is mainly on the relationship between forests, forest tourism and human beings, basic sciences related to forest tourism, relevant concepts, attributes, characteristics and major contents of forest tourism. History and Present State of China's Forest TourismThis section is focused on the characteristics of different stages of China's forest tourism, main practices, development planning and zoning. Status Quo of Overseas Forest Tourism DevelopmentThis section highlights the development of forest tourism in other countries, its status quo and theories. Prospects and Conditions of China' Forest TourismIn this section, analysis is presented on the trend of diversified development, theopportunity and challenge it is confronted with after China's entry into WTO, the strong and weak points based on the SWOT analytical outcomes, management scheme including resources, techniques, funding and personnel. Strategies and Measures for China's Forest TourismThis section presents a description on the long-term strategies for developing forest tourism in China in terms of planning, management and marketing, and difference of development between China and other countries. This section also devotes some space to combination of ecology, China traditional gardening techniques, forest aesthetics and relevant theories to take advantage of forest tourism to grasp opportunities and overcome the weak points and threats, to carry forward China traditional planning and design methods and introduce advanced theories and management methods from other countries.This paper proceeds from the study on how to speed up the development of China's forest tourism in a multidisciplinary manner, and in strict compliance with the national standards, relevant regulations and terminologies, and introduces quite a few practical cases and examples both at home and abroad just to make the contents detailed and specific, and convenient for reference.
