At present, as the economy and population in Chinese cities is increasing rapidly, more and more land is being occupied for construction, thus making the little agricultural land less. So how to control the area and scale of land for construction and to avoid the encroachment on agrarian land, and at the same time, to meet the requirements of economic and social developments on the growth of land, becomes a problem for urban planners and city managers to address urgently. The main research object of this thesis is the urban land for construction. First of all, the evolution, under the influence of national policies, of the configuration and scale of urban land for construction in China from its foundation is reviewed, and then, on the basis of the status quo of the explosive expansion of the land for construction in Chinese cities, the author analyzes the impacts of the economic, social, and ecological environments on urban land for construction, especially the four essential residential, industrial, road and square, and green lands, the needs of which will increase rapidly and necessarily, since the improvement of urbanization level in population, economy, and capacity. Afterwards, by studying the configurations and characteristics of urban land in the process of urbanization, and related theories and factors which influenced the evolution of urban land in urbanization in western world, the author projects the tendency of urban land for construction in China in the next two decades, and correspondingly puts forward the strategies for land use planning, so that planning and management can play a role of guiding and controlling the urban land for construction, prevent the urban land for construction from sprawling infinitely, and meet the requirement of modernization on the land, thus fulfilling the four objectives harmoniously: saving land resource, boosting economic growth, promoting the society, and protecting the eco-environment.
