In 21century,China has come into the era of rapid urbanization. During the course of urbanization, large population, scarce cultivated land and limited urban land resources are all difficulties that China has to face. Deep research on sustainable urban land use is not only beneficial to reasonably resolve the sharp contradiction between population and land resources, but also helpful to achieve sustainable urban development. This paper focuses on urban land use changes in Shanghai, analyzes the present situation of land use of this area and some countermeasures for attaining to sustainable use of land resources are also suggested.Firstly the paper introduces the academic and practical significance of the research topic and the methods of this study. Then it systematically summarizes the theories of urban land use and reviews the research of urban land use at home and abroad. After that is the analysis of the background, structure, layout and dynamic change of Shanghai's land use. The key part of this paper is to set up the evaluating indicator of Shanghai's sustainable land use. On this basis, the paper evaluates the sustainable land use of Shanghai in 1990,2000 and 2003.According to the present situation of Shanghai's land use, it points out the problems on land using and countermeasures for solving them. Finally, there is a brief summary of the paper and an expectation for Shanghai's future land use.Though studying, it is found that Shanghai has come into the era of primary sustainable land use from non- sustainable land use. In the future, Shanghai needs to do more work to achieve sustainable land use.
