With the continuous development of ideological and political education, youth ideological and political education has been considered as an important part of the system of ideological and political education, and the theoretical framework of it has been constantly developed and improved. As the basis of construction of the theoretical system of youth ideological and political education, the essence of youth ideological and political education has become a vital theoretical issue in this system. Therefore, the study of the essence of youth ideological and political education is a fundamental and basic issue.This research proceeds from the conception of essence and is based on the systematic description and induction of the essential qualities of the young, the essence of the ideological and political education and the essence of youth ideological and political education, which borrows ideas from the existing research achievements, to further analyze the essence of youth ideological and political education, namely imparting and educating, from the perspectives of Marxist theoretical dimensions, youth ontology dimensions and youth reality dimensions under the background of youth ideological and political education itself. Meanwhile, this paper will reveal external performance of the essence that is indoctrination through attribute level, feature level and activity level. In addition to preface and conclusion, the whole thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One is Research Angle. This section will discuss and clarify the essence and related categories, and will explore the nature of youth ideological and political education from the angles of education, politics and sociology, putting forward elementary propositions of the essence of ideological and political education, which starts from the essence and attribute of philosophy. From the above study, it's clear to see "what is the problem", and thus provides the theoretical premise for the research.Chapter Two is Argument Foundation. Based on the perspectives of Marxist theoretical dimensions, youth ontology dimensions and youth reality dimensions, the paper will expound the scientific evidence which supports youth ideological and political education and focus on explaining the "why" of the essence of youth ideological and political education, and therefore provide theoretical basis for the definition of youth ideological and political education.Chapter Three is Connotation Interpretation. In the vision of youth ideological and political education, the paper will adopt the dialectical materialism and the historical materialism during this chapter, to define the nature of this kind of education as indoctrination, imparting and education. Furthermore, this paper will expound the origin and development of indoctrination, especially the development in China, and detail the interpretation about the essence of youth ideological and political education. In this way, the paper clarifies "what is the essence", and thereby, specifies the significant realistic values.Chapter Four is External Performance. In the last part, the paper will generalize the external performance of the essence that is materialized from the attribute level, feature level and activity level, and therefore respond to the question "how is the essence". What's more, the paper will find out the practicable methods to solve the problem, that is, to confirm the external performance of youth ideological and political education.
