With the development of the world, the energy resources have become one of the most important factors to the society. The ocean and the continental shelf have a large space for us to exploit. With the continuous research, the system has become more and more completely. The real problem about the rules of the division of the continuous shelf is the right. The coastal countries does not stop debating despite of the appearance of the Convention on the Continental Shelf or the United Nations Convention. On the contrary, with the increasingly competition on politics, economics, military affairs, the coastal countries desire more resources from the continental shelf.Using the study of methodology of comparative and analysis, the thesis mainly attaches on the rules of the division line of continental shelf. The thesis is composed of four chapters; the main content as follows:Chapter One discusses several rules about the division line of the continental shelf. With the analysis and compare about the rules, we can conclude the legal status of each rule. It will help the UN International Court of Justice to solve the similar case with a stable keynote and consider the interest of each part.Chapter two studies the relationship with each rule of the division line of the continental shelf with the methodology of comparative and analysis. The principle of fairness is the most important rule for judgment. The principle called natural extension and middle line are reflected in the conclusion after a series procedures.Chapter three discusses all relevant circumstances in the proceedings. The concept is another important factor to the judgment. In some cases, it will affect the judgment because the court may regard it as a decisive factor to the specific cases. As a result, the comparative and analysis on the relevant circumstances is necessary.According to the above three chapters, chapter four studies the argument between China and Japan about the East China Sea Continental shelf. There must be a compromise approach for each part to solve the problem of the division line. It can not only help us on sustainable development but also give us a reference on the future argument.
