Tourism plays an important role in a nation's economic and social development, and star-hotels are an indispensable part of its tourist industry. A good management of star-hotels can meet the needs of the tourism development. Now in China a series of difficulties has arisen in the rapid development of star-hotels in scale and in the process of their growing into conglomerates. And the solutions to the problems lie in the motivating mechanism for the staff. Based on the staff's satisfaction, the motivating mechanism has become an exploratory subject. In this way, the hotel * staff may have greater incentives to work and be more creative to help the hotel to reach its objectives.This paper, on the basis of some basic theories, makes an analysis of the star-hotel staff's needs and the motivating factors to their satisfaction, elaborates the present situation in which to encourage the staff to work harder, and introduces a motivating mechanism to give the staff members to greater efforts, thus making it have an upper hand in competition.This article consists of five parts in all. The first part gives the definition of the term motivating and its relative basic theories and the summary of different types. The second part analyzes the factors to motivate the hotel staff on the basis of an empirical analysis of a questionnaire conducted in a sample hotel. The third part introduces the needs of the hotel staff. The fourth part elaborates the present motivation of the motivating mechanism and points out the existing problems.
