An Empirical Research On The Development Of Zhejiang's Employment

As a province with large population and scarce natural resources, Zhejiang produces substantial job opportunities with great speed by turning the pressure of the employment into the momentum of problem-solving. Through the empirical research on evolution of Zhejiang's employment from 1992 to 2002, it is the purpose of this thesis to analyze the factors influencing the total employment of the Zhejiang from numeric, structural as well as institutional aspects, and thus to explain systematically why Zhejiang can maintain rapid increase on the total of employment opportunities.To analyze the total of the Zhejiang's employment is to analyze its labor supply and demand. From the side of labor supply, it can be seen that the population of Zhejiang is ever-increasing; that the laborers are increasing at a greater speed; and that immigration from other provinces further increases the labor supply. From the side of labor demand, it might be concluded that the macroeconomic development of Zhejiang enhances the labor demand.For structural analysis, this paper focuses on the analysis of industrial structure and ownership structure. Based on the premises that the secondary, tertiary industry absorb large amounts of laborers, it is argued that the manufacturing industry, wholesale and retail trade, restaurant industry and service sector contribute most to the increase of new job chances. Then the article summarizes the characteristic of the industrial structure that improves Zhejiang's employment, that is the prosperity of the labor-intensive industry.By analyzing the ownership structure, this paper holds that the nongovernmental business is the important way to increase the employment of Zhejiang. In urban areas, private enterprises have topped the state-owned and collectively owned units in job offering.
