The European Union (EU), derived from the European Coal and Steel Treaty Organization founded by France, Germany, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg in 1951, is an endeavor of polity reform in modern times, which showed great significance to the development of world politics. It has not been a smooth way for the development of the European integration for fifty years. Moreover, being regarded as the engine of the integration, Franco-German relations are deeply concerned by the academia. In the early 1950s, France and Germany finally became reconciled in the framework of European integration. This reconciliation was a major factor that enhanced the European integration. In other words, there would be no development of European integration without the reconciliation between France and Germany. Meantime, the European Integration after World War II is in fact the unique opportunity for the reconciliation between France and Germany. Franco-German reconciliation accelerated the European integration from theory to reality.Franco-German reconciliation and cooperation is the cornerstone of the process of the early West European integration. During the decades of years in the European integration, Franco-German relations didn't remain friendly all the time, which was determined by the changes of the international situation and the different power of each country. Franco-German relations have a direct influence on the process of European integration. This dissertation attempts to explore the development and change of Franco-German relations in different periods and its according influence on European integration. Since Franco-German relations and European integration facilitated each other, they constituted an inseparable whole. At the same time, East Asia may draw useful reference from the Franco-German relations. After World War II, France and Germany moved towards reconciliation and cooperation in terms of their own countries' benefit and the benefit of the whole Europe, thus promoting the process of the European integration, unifying the whole Europe to be one important power in the world and realizing double-win. However, because of the history the Sino-Japanese relations are difficult to move further, which extremely restricts the potentialities between the two countries. Even though, the international background of Franco-German reconciliation was impossible to re-exist in Asia, we can draw references from the means of their reconciliation.Reconciliation has been one of the major tendencies in the global integration. No model is more successful than the European Union at present, which set a good example to Asia and even the whole world. When people pay much attention on the achievements of the European Union today, it is necessary and significant to reexamine the growth of the European Union, which may be helpful in Asian integration.By adopting the methods of contrastive analysis and case analysis, this dissertation probes the political phenomenon on the basis of neo-functionalism, neo-liberalism and constructivism with the purpose of gaining academic, theoretical and practical significance. Four parts are included in this dissertation, they are:Part I The reasons for Franco-German reconciliation are explicated. With the stable mutual relations and an effective set of operational mechanism on political negation, cooperation and policy decision, France and Germany are actively involved in the process of the European integration.Part II Special emphasis is placed on the changes in the Franco-German relations after the cold war and its role in the European integration in this period.Part III Full argument goes to the influence of the Iraq War on the Franco-German relations and the four characteristics of Franco-German relations in this period.Part IV The future tendency of Franco-German relations and the influence of their different opinions on the European integration are involved...
