Over the past sixty years, the UN has played an important role in advancing the status of women worldwide. This dissertation begins with an analysis of the Marxist theory on gender equality, and proceeds to discuss the role of the UN in the advancement of women and its effects thereon. The root cause of women's low status can be traced back to the private ownership. Only when society is developed to a certain extent and the persistence of discrimination is eliminated, will women obtain a genuine equal status. The UN's principles on women include protection of women's human rights and promotion for women's full integration in development. Under the principle of human rights protection, the UN has defined women's human rights, approved Conventions, passed Declarations and monitored its member states'work on the status of women. Further more, the UN has promoted the full integration of women in development. The UN has realized the integration of women in development would accelerate the women development as well as the society development. Women are not only the beneficiary and participant of development, but also the motivator of development. Under the two principles, the UN has established related institutions, convened World Conferences on Women. In addition, the UN has come out a lot of specific work for the advancement of gender equality, such as offering related information, doing researches, collecting statistics, assisting individual women or girls, etc.Although the UN has made of a lot of achievements, challenges exists, including the impact of the globalization, AIDS/HIV, low education, armed conflicts, sovereignty principle, and the limits of UN institution and so on. The Organization still has a long way to go.
