Zbigniew Brzezinski is the former U.S. national security adviser, and he is the famous contemporary geo-politician and strategist in United States. Now he is the political science professor of Columbia University and the adviser of Georgetown University Center for Strategic and International Studies. Brzezinski himself both in academia and in the political circles are an active figure, he is a prolific scholar as well as a very influential man in political circles. And he has had a great impact on the theory and practice of international relations. Especially the"big game"prompted a strong reaction in academic circles at home and abroad. The dissertation will comprehensively describe the formulation and evolution of Brzezinski's thought of Geography Stragtegy, than analysis the characteristics of it and the enlightenment for China's future strategy. There are three chapters:Chapterâ… mainly describe the formation of Brzezinski's thought of Geo-strategy. This chapter will elaborate the background of formation of Brzezinski's Geography Strategy. In his Childhood, his father's Pessimism mood had a bad effect to him. In Harvard University, there had two teachers who encouraged and supported him in study. In addition, that Brzezinski's thoughts may have been affected by his Democratic Party affiliation, a feud with Henry Kissinger, who had a important affect to Brzezinski in scholarly research and political orientation. Brzezinski experiences the whole process of Cold war. The change of Geopolitics in Cold war proved Brzezinski a good chance to known the reality politic. During the Cold War, the confrontation of ideological was the main features of the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States. The early Cold War, the confrontation of ideological between the United States and the Soviet Union was very strong, but in 1960s and 1970s, with the demands of national interest far beyond the attractiveness of a common ideology, the United States and the Soviet Union so had begun to pursuit the national interests all over the world, while other countries of the world also downplayed the ideological colors, and explored the foreign policy which service for its own national interests. In the same time, the Geopolitical theory proved a theoretical foundation for Brzezinski to formulating the thoughts of Geography Strategy. Brzezinski's thought influenced by Mr Jin's geo-political theory and Speakman's geo-political theory. Mr Jin's"heart"theory pointed the Strategic focus for Brzezinski's Geography Stragtegy, and Speakman's geo-political theory proved the theoretical foundation for Brzezinski to establish the Strategic objectives and strategic means.Chapterâ…¡mainly describe the evolution of Brzezinski's thought of Geo-strategy. Brzezinski was a Professor in Columbia University before he serviced for Carter administration as a National security Advisor. He was work hard in academic research, and had so interesting in international political and American Foreign Policy that he written many articles about that. He was very interested in the international political issues, and he had a lot of studies in many fields, which made his theory lack the consistency in whole. Brzezinski's works in different periods reflected the evolution of his thoughts, and the early academic research provided the foundation for his geo-strategic thinking. In 1977-1981 Brzezinski serviced President Carter as a national security adviser. During this period, he putted the results of theoretical studies into the political reality, the thoughts of geo-strategic was used in the diplomatic relations with Soviet Union. Brzezinski strongly emphasized the importance of strength, and he looked at the international political issue from the geopolitical and strategic interest, especially in US-Soviet relations. After Carter was failure in election, Brzezinski returned to University, and continued to engage in academic research, but he changed his focus from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union to the geo-strategic issues research, and his thought of geo-strategic had further development and perfection.Chapters III mainly describe the characteristics of Brzezinski's thought of Geo-strategy. Brzezinski took the benefits of nation as the start point of achieve the interests of the United States. Whether the strategy to Soviet Union during the Cold War or the post-Cold War global strategy, Brzezinski had always been able to more objective look at the strength of the United States itself, and designed the strategic to serve as the benefit of the United States. During the Cold War, Brzezinski considered the ease of the United States and the Soviet Union as the first target, and eventually defeated the Soviet Union as the highest requirement for the national interests of the United States. After the Cold War, Brzezinski considered that protect American hegemony and delayed the decline of American hegemony as the requirements of the interests of United States. Brzezinski also adjusted the strategic goals in accordance to the change of international political situation, and flexibly used the strategy means correspond, for example, the Peaceful means, the Balance of power tools and the Strategic alliance. Which made it difficult to maintain the strategy continuity, but because of its starting point of the strategy was consistent, so there was a certain degree of continuity in entire internal strategic, just the greater flexibility of strategic targets and means made it had a strong vitality.Through my studying the Zbigniew Brzezinski's thought of geo-strategy, I find that Brzezinski took the geopolitical theories as a guide and the real geopolitics as his strategy's basis, and then he put the geopolitics and strategies together. Base on the geography's realities of the United States, Brzezinski analyzed the real geopolitics of the United State in the different era, and with more objective attitude to evaluate national strength of the United States in the different historical periods. After Brzezinski cleared the strategic targets, he adjusted the strategic objectives and means in order to achieve the national interests of United States. Although there are power politics and hegemonism in Brzezinski's thought of geo-strategy. But we do not neglect the meaning and value of Brzezinski's geopolitics thoughts and inspiration to China's future strategy. There are a lot of inspirations.
