| This research is a field study about a village locates in the middle of Shandong Province. In the research, the village is called village H. Village H is distant from cities and short of natural resources, however, it turns to be a nonagricultural village. By analyzing the development process of village H, we try to examine how village H to take initiation in developing and become nonagricultural. We collected data by interviewing villagers and acquiring documents about the development of village H. By means of qualitative analysis of these data, we find that in the beginning of development, the village exploited not only the internal contact between village party committee and official administration but also the traditional geographical relationship and social network inside the village itself. In village H's development, bequeathal collectivistic ideology affects its developing route, and furthermore, village party committee inherits powerful mobilizing abilities and leads the development. Meanwhile, the traditions inner the village transit quietly. Villagers' professions turn to nonagricultural. Their time sense, life tempo and communication ways also change. The traditional mode of support the aged becomes from familial to semi-socialized. The traditions of supporting and respecting the old are strengthened rather than weakened. These changes indicate the tendency for peasants to citizens. In the end, we summarize the logic of village H's development. In the interaction between inner traditional factors and outer modern factors, the village takes invitation in exploiting limited interior resources and achieves endogenous development. We consider that the key factor in the development is villagers' organization which arises from precedent collectivistic organization. We also find this kind of villagers' organization at a disadvantage of homogeneity and closeness. It should increase openness and participate in division and cooperation of specialized field. |
