American women account for half of the total population of the United States , but it is a underprivileged groups in politics. American women had already had the awareness of political awakening in the colonial period . In 1948 ,the first meeting of the women's rights convention was held , women had put forward the request of right to vote in public, but the U.S Congress didn't give women the vote until 1920. In 1920 , women had got a prerequisite for political participation, they could vote the candidates concerned about women's issues by voting.The struggle for suffrage lasted more than 70 years, which underwent a long and difficult course .But women did not take part in the election , even though women had the right to vote . So their political status had not changed fundamentally, even if women had access to the right to vote . Because women did not really aware of the significance of the right to vote for their own , their enthusiasm for political participation was not high . But in the 1980s, women had came to the political center from the political edge ,and they had made great achievements as the promotion of a series of factors.In the 1980s, although American women had made great achievements in political participation, there still existed some problems and drawbacks . It is a long and difficult process that women will obtain the status of full equality with men, and it requires the joint efforts of the whole society , because of the deep-rooted traditional values and the serious constraints of realistic factors .The dissertation consists of the introduction part ,the main body ,the conclusion and the the Reference.The introduction part mainly illustrates the concepts of political participation and women's political participation, research significance, domestic and American academic research on the dynamics of American women's political participation.The main body consists of three chapters.The first chapter is based on the historical examination of women's suffrage movement as the starting point.I make an introduction to the political awakening of women in the American colonial period, and the situation of the early women's movement ,and the great efforts and arduous struggle women had made for the purpose of obtaining suffrage.The second chapter mainly analyzes of the status of women's political participation in the 1980s from socilofy snd statistics aspect .I make a systematic summary of achievements, problems and drawbacks in women's political participation.The main achievements of women's political participation are: women's awareness and concept of political participation had improved greatly, the members of women in the public department had increased greatly and Chinese-American women on political arena had rised rapidly.The chapter is the focus of the dissertation .The third chapter mainly analyses the constraints in women's political participation from the sociological and psychological aspect ,and puts forward my own views that how to improve the level of women's political participation.The conclusion part is a summary of the dissertation. It mainly makes a summary of the status of women's political participation in the 80s and the significance of American women's political participation, and makes the prospect of the trend of women's political participation. Finally, the essay puts forward that the future of women's political participation is bright, but the road is tortuous.
