During the 50s of the last century, the global politics was further complicated by the increasing tension from East-West confrontation in the wake of the Second World War. Sharing, if not being cultivated in, the same ideology as the Soviet Union, the newly born People's Republic of China joined the Eastern social union which in turn ushered the Sino-Soviet relationship to another higher level. The PRC navy was founded in extreme deficiency of both intellect and equipment. From its bumpy start towards a well-constructed modern force, the former Soviet Union, whom only that Chinese navy could rely on for its naval technology, had offered significant and decisive military aid during that period. This article examines the backdrop of Sino-Soviet naval structuring in the 1950s, revealing the general principles of military technical transfer by comparing the disparity of naval powers of the two nations. Pursuant to a series of treaties signed between the PRC and the former Soviet Union, the latter party had been providing assistance in areas including intellectual educating, equipment and project constructing. Those aids and supports have laid a solid foundation for the development of the Chinese navy, which has grown into a near-sea defensive force with multiple services and considerable war-fighting capacity in a relatively short period. Even though we should never overlook the particular context where this military aid took place, such close cooperation between the Chinese and Soviet navies could still provide us with useful lesson and inspiration to better achieve the modernization of the contemporary Chinese navy.
