In the period between 1952 and 1958, after the newly established CCP regime achieved its success in the New-Democratic Revolution, a series of Socialist Revolution based on land collectivization and agricultural cooperation launched in China rural society. If the land reform was defined as"revolution"in rural society, then I tend to define the"Socialist Revolution"as a"Continuative Revolution". In the process of Agricultural Cooperation, the basic operating mechanism of rural society, the institutional arrangement of agricultural production, the daily life of the villagers, and their ideological form again experienced enormous transformation after the Land Reform. Poor villagers in West Village hand in their land to"the collective". The land deed was no longer effective, and the mere stone was torn down. Villagers were turned from unrestricted and self-sufficient peasants into cooperation members who participated in routine work and lived on work points. In this thesis, I gathered plenty of nuncupative materials from local folks through field investigation and nuncupative practice in West Village in Northern China. I tried to re-describe the social history of the Cooperative Movement in West Village based on the analysis of both official and non-official materials. By remolding of social features and history scenes, I would like to emphasize the concept of"continuative". From my point of view, the so-called"Continuative Revolution"at least contains the following levels of meanings. First of all, Cooperative Movement was an extension of the Land Reform in historical series. Secondly, the Cooperative Movement was a subsistence of the Land Reform logic. In The Cooperative Movement process, the state power continued to employ propaganda means it used in Land Reform. Thirdly, the Cooperative Movement was a shift of focus in Land Reform. The substance of Land Reform emphasized movements in social political aspects. However, the Cooperative Movement emphasized great changes in economic fields such as production and distribution. The state power re-arranged the basic agricultural production system, and tried to finalize the"Socialistic"continuative revolution in this way.Fourthly, the series of institutional re-arranging have further accelerated the division of villagers'hearts. The physical pain accumulated and formed the"bitterness"in the new period, but the collective mode of production, together with the public life of new period have brought them mental pleasure.During the period of Cooperative Movement, the encounter and collision between the state power and the world of rural morality have expanded from social-political field to the productive allocation field, and then have emerged in the concrete empirical reality, forming a mutual embedding and mutual influencing pattern. They have created the perplexed and complicated new socialist builder, and in the mean time formed the basic style and features of the Communist country and rural society.
