Nowadays English teaching and learning is becoming more and more monotonous and dull in many rural schools because of the entrance exams. These schools focus on the teaching of grammar and huge amounts of sample tests, ignoring the essence of language learning. As a result, students become bored with English learning and on the contrary they can't get good marks as they are expected. As for the important ability of "speaking", students still fall behind according to the curriculum standards.Ideal English learning style should bring students pleasure and enjoyment during the learning procedure, give students enough chances to practice listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students can not only get good marks but also develop abilities of cooperation, communication, autonomous learning and so on.Then, how to guide students to develop these abilities? The answer is assessment. Assessment has multifunction, such as guidance, stimulation, evaluation, supervision, adjustment and diagnosis. Assessment reflects the idea of teaching which directs the purposes of students'development of learning habits and comprehensive quality. Thus, how to assess determines the improvement of English learning. In this essay, the writer explained the application of "credit note" in rural school English teaching. "Credit Note" is an original creation of paper product which looks like a stamp with credit on it. The patterns on it come from the art works created by the teachers, students and famous persons from all walks of life. Using "credit note" as rewards for the students'good performance or improvements in school is unique and creative and deeply loved by students. "Credit Note" can be designed by students themselves. It can be used to collect as a hobby, to consume in the school supermarket which supplies all kinds of students'and teachers'art works and other meaningful products or to deposit in the school "credit bank". At the beginning, students learn actively because they love "credit note" and want to get more, but little by little they fall in love with what they are learning because they have the sense of success from time to time. Students develop good learning habits, comprehensive quality and other abilities by pursuing "credit note", so the assessment of "credit note" plays an important role in the improvement of students'English learning.
