BackgroundSince reform and opening up policy, accompany with economic increasing and the communicating with western country, the concept of Chinese has great changes, the attitude of sex is becoming open. Premarital sex, extramarital sex are also increasing.Sociosexuality has been described as "individual differences in willingness to engage in uncommitted sexual relations" (Simpson & Gangestad,1991, p.870). To measure sociosexuality, Simpson and Gangestad developed the sociosexual orientation inventory (SOI). People scoring low on the SOI typically require commitment before engaging in a sexual relationship, whereas people scoring high typically require little or no commitment. The SOI has proven useful in uncovering interesting patterns of relationships. For example, findings using the SOI instrument have demonstrated that sexually unrestricted individuals, in contrast to restricted, (1) rate attractiveness and social visibility as more important in a dating partner than personal/parental qualities, and (2) have actual dating partners who are higher in social attractiveness, but less responsible, and less faithful/loyal and affectionate than the dating partners of the unrestricted individuals (Simpson & Gangestad,1992).There were many researches about sociosexuality in foreign countries, but we haven't found the similar research in China. We can learn about premarital sex and extramarital sex from the SOI. We can compare the SOI score between China and western countries.Objectives1. Translated SOI into Chinese, Understanding of the reliability and validity and the application of this scale in China.2. Examine the dimensionality of the SOI by using confirmatory factor analysis3. Understand the overall level of sociosexual orientation in Chinese urban people, and compare with other countries in the world.4. Find the factors which influence Chinese urban people's sociosexual orientation, and analyze the reasonsMethods1. Subjects:above junior high school level, between 20 and 39 years old2. Sampling method:convenience sampling. Based on economic conditions, we selected Zhejiang, Guizhou province, then selected capital city (Hangzhou, Guiyang) and non-capital city (Shaoxing, Chishui).3. Measurement tools:sociosexul orientation inventory4. Statistical analysis tools:using EPIDATA3.0 to enter data, using SPSS16.0, AMOS7.0 for statistical analysis.5. Analysis:A confirmatory factor analysis to understand the structure and dimensions of SOI. Scale reliability used Cronbach a, split-half reliability, composite reliability. Scale validity used critical ratio and discriminant validity Non-parametric test to compare the SOI score of different demographic characteristics groups. Using logistic regression analysis to find the impact of sociosexual orientation in Chinese population.Results1. The dual-factor model that accounted for both behavioral (Items 1-3) and attitudinal (Items 2,5-7) had goodness-of-fit.2. Reliability:Cronbach a was 0.75, split-half reliability was 0.628, composite reliability 0.77 and 0.661. Validity:Discriminant validity, chi-square difference value was 322.04, p<0.05; critical ratios were statistically significant.3. The overall score was 29.02±20.98. The SOI scores were statistically significant differences in different gender, different age groups. The gender and marriage statues were the factors of sociosexual orientation by logistic analysis.Conclusion1. SOI has a good reliability and validity in Chinese population. The SOI can serve as an effective tool to measure the sociosexual orientation in Chinese urban population.2. The dual-factor model had goodness-of-fit.3. Chinese urban people's sociosexual orientation was at the lowest level of the world. The universality sex difference in sociosexuality was also present in Chinese population. But different with western population, marital status was also impact peoples'sociosexual orientation.
