With the development of new curriculum reforming, the three curriculum targets--knowledge & abilities, process & methods, attitudes & values, have been carried out in geography teaching. But it also has difficulties in assessments of them. The performance assessments have been accepted by most geography teachers, but they will spend much time in applying it. So many geography teachers are willing to choose paper-and-pencil tests as students' geography academic achievements assessments, which are more convenient, time-saving, and full of objective questions. Paper-pencil performance assessments have the advantages of paper-pencil test and performance assessments, so they'll be a good choice for students' geography academic achievements assessments. The article is formed by 4 chapters.The fist chapter is introduction of research background, aims, meanings, methods, contents, and innovation points.The second chapter is the overview of paper-pencil performance assessments. It contains definition, classification, advantages and disadvantages of paper-pencil performance assessments.The third chapter is about the applications of paper-pencil performance assessments in foreign countries and our country by using literature review and statistical analysis.The fourth chapter is using the case of "City" to illustrate the strategies of the application of paper-pencil performance assessments. It contains tasks designing and scoring rubrics designing.
