With the influence of the New Curriculum Criteria, Communicative Method has become the mainstream in teaching methods in classroom of English teaching in middle school. In consequence, grammar teaching has been fading out. The students'speaking ability and listening has been improved at the same time, but the students'competence of comprehension and literacy is degenerating. Under this situation, English teaching starts to explore the importance of English grammar teaching and the new ways of English grammar teaching.The study intends to answer the following three questions:Whether the grammar should be taught or not in CLT? What is the student's attitude of students and teachers towards grammar learning? What strategies are helpful to improve students'English grammar study? In order to solve the above-mentioned questions, the paper adopts the combination of theoretical study questionnaire investigation method, experimental method and classroom observation. And at the same time the study also make reference to English grammar teaching experience and lessons and the author's own teaching practice. The study conducted a teaching experiment for a semester (from September 2010 to 2011 January). The experimental subjects were two classes of students in Grade 7. Firstly, pre-test was made to have a basic understanding of their English level. Then Class Three accepted the comprehensive grammar teaching approach, while Class Four was the comparative group. And then post-test was made to check the result of the experiment. Meanwhile through questionnaire questionnaires, the study made survey on the attitude of English teachers and students towards grammar.The study found that grammar is the basic of English teaching, and it os necessary to teach grammar in class. And teaching methods should be optimized, namely:grammar should be taught in comprehensive grammar methods, which includes Task-based Grammar, Inquiry Grammar Teaching Method, Situational Grammar Teaching, Combination of Explicit and Implicit Grammar Teaching, and Teaching in Games, Combination of Contrast and Induction Method.The study intends to provide enlightenment to the real practice of grammar teaching through solving of problems existing in the English grammar teaching. Because the teaching practice is limited, and some individual problems need the further research. But this paper still offers certain enlightenment for a middle school English grammar teaching. It is hoped for future middle school English grammar teaching research a view to play a valuable role.
