English has been learnt as a foreign language for more than 30 years in China; however, it's still very difficult for most students to master because of a lack of corresponding language environment. Despite the great efforts both teachers and students have made, the teaching result is still far from satisfactory. While Chinese, as a language, which is taught with the traditional teaching method-- reciting, is taught very successfully in China. There is a saying, "When one learns 300 poems of the Tang Dynasty by heart, one is sure to be able to write poetry". In reality, all the experts in the Chinese language can recite a great many famous poems and articles, so that words flow from their mouth as from the pen of a master, which makes all of us admire them from the bottom of our heart. So, a question strikes us:since both of them are languages, why can not we share the same learning method while learning English? From the new syllabus we know that language skills are the main part of language usage. Language skills consist of four basic skills--- listening, speaking, reading and writing and their comprehensive utilization. Reciting can combine the four skills and make for our English learning. What is more, it can enhance our sense of language and improve our English level. However, reciting is always ignored by teachers and students. The reason lies in two facts. One is that there is not any exam question in English exams to detect if the students can recite the text they have learned, as a result, students never take it seriously. The other reason is that many people hold the wrong opinion that reciting is rotting, which makes reciting overlooked. In addition, senior high school students are too busy to spend a lot of time on reciting and many teachers and students think it is worthless to do so. They won't take trouble to have a try even though they think it may be useful,. However, the importance of reciting can't be ignored. It is a real kind of input and can contribute to the improvement of one's language ability. Language output depends on language input. Only by reciting what we learn can we learn them by heart and use them naturally and smoothly. The subject of the study is senior school students in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas. In the study, the traditional teaching method——"reciting" is applied to in English Writing Teaching to verify that reciting plays an important role in English writing in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas. Several theories are adopted in the thesis:Stephen Krashen's Input Theory, Hermann Ebbinghaus' Forgetting Curve and Immanuel Kant's Schema Theory. At the same time, research methods, such as: Questionnaire, document research, experiment and comparison are used in the study. Based on theories and experiments, this thesis mainly bears out that reciting is an effective way for senior school students in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas, because it can not only help them master lots of English knowledge, but also enhance their language sense, and improve their language skills, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing, thus, laying a solid foundation of language output. In conclusion, this thesis is mainly written to change the doubtful or even negative attitude to reciting that teachers and students in small and medium-sized cities and rural areas have been holding, and appeal to them to carry out this simple method in their study and achieve a good result.
