Population and economic growth have a closely dialectic relationship, in which they support and promote each other. To obtain economic growth, on one hand, the first step is to affect human resources which are closely related with population change. On the other hand, the ultimate goal of planning for economic-social development is to increase people's life quality. That goal can be achieved with the size, growth rate, population distribution and human resources which are consistent with every local economy. As the population and working labor, especially labor who have highly technical competences scale up quickly, there would be more products and accordingly increasing the GDP value. As a result, the economic growth rate would be high and be maintained within many years. The relationship between population change and economic growth is also described by other quantitative ratios such as labor productivity, capital investment for one labor unit, income and residential expenditures, etc. Consequentially, determining the relationship between population change and economic growth is an objective requirement in achieving the goal of planning for economic-social development of HCMC. In addition, HCMC is a nucleus of the Southern key economic region. Hence, population change and economic growth of the city also have strong impacts on the regional economic development.Stemming from the problem mentioned above, the topic will concentrate on analyzing the actual circumstance of the relationship between population change and economic growth. Simultaneously, the topic will compare that relationship with the Southern key economic region, presenting scientific arguments to specifically identify a suitable econometric model with the economic conditions of the HCMC in order to reinforce that relationship. Thus, the research project of "Analysis of the relationships between population change and economic growth of HCMC" is essential and urgent in the current periodFrom the above question, the topic will focus on studying and analyzing the relationship between population change and economic growth of HCMC in the period 1995-2009, comparing that relationship within the context of HCM with the provinces located within the Southern key economic region. Based on that analysis, the topic will propose certain solutions for reinforcing that relationship.
