English reading is one of the ways of gaining information rapidly as the society information goes fast. Now, reading has become one of the most important parts in English education gradually in China. The improvement of reading ability relates with the linguistic comprehensive abilities especially with the communicative competence of the students directly. Nowadays, the urgent problem that needs to be solved in English teaching is how to improve the abilities of English reading quickly and effectively. However, traditional English teaching ignores the discourse analyzing and holding in English reading and the application of all kinds of cohesive devices. Moreover, it neglects students'capabilities of problem-analyzing, problem-solving, thinking and innovating. That is also one of the key factors that students'reading ability is hard to be improved fast at present.The textual cohesion theory is the key means for discourse analysis. It emphasizes that it takes discourse as a whole for English reading teaching and stresses the function and usage of cohesive devices. Those devices include two important parts, that is, grammatical cohesion and lexical cohesion. It is feasible to apply this theory to English reading teaching since it underlines language knowledge teaching. At the same time, it shows the knowledge of pragmatics, cognition, style and cultural setting of the target language. Not only the methods of English teaching are effectively enriched, the teaching effect is also improved.Under such background, this research chose the third year students that had the same English reading scores in two similar classes as the experimental subject, based on Chunxiao middle school that I had practice. They did the reading test paper I chose carefully in the stipulated time. According to the experiment, I tried to find the potential application of cohesive devices into English reading teaching in junior middle school from the angle of discourse. From the experiment, I found there were lots of barriers and problems in students'knowing and using textual cohesion theory. Thus, this paper shows some feasible measures in order to help and inspire English teachers and also help students improve English reading and studying abilities by some examples and comparison.
