It was firstly put forward that teachers should help students to form effective English (as a foreign language) Learning strategies in the Junior English Teaching Syllabus,which was promulgated by the State Education l)epartment in March, 2000. The dominant idea in Quality-oriented Education is to induce students to join positively in learning activities, to use effective learning strategies independently and actively, to become master of learning. Research on English learning strategies (IIS) provides a new way to improve the English teaching quality in middle schools. It wi].i help to promote theories of foreign Language learning to link with practice ot middle school English teaching. It will promote teachers to improve teaching skills more scientifically and consciously. It will also improve the English learning quality of middle school students.In and abroad,many scholars have done a lot of researches on foreign language learning strategies, which are on the notion,classification and research methods, and have gained fruitful results.But up till now,most English teachers in middle schools are still lacking in knowing learning strategies. On the other hand, present research on English (as a foreign language) learning strategies mostly focuses on theory. '['he achievement in practical research, especially in experimental research on training is far more inadequate. Its experimental research has great. practical value, hut it is hard to carry out as any other experimental research. So the experimental research on learning strategies training is still nearLy blank. We do the first term experimental research on training of English learning strategies for junior students, expecting it will be helpful for people to understand the [earning theory and benefit training practice. At the same time, we can take the chance to turn to experts and col Leagues for valuable advice.This paper consists of four parts.'fhc first part elaborates these following things about English learning strategies of middle school students: the notion and the construction, the theories relied on and its practical si~nificaricc, its present research situation,and our understanding about the possibility of strategies training.'fhe second part elaborates the procedure and the method of this cxpcriment.According to the achievement analysis of the final English examination (July, 1999) for Junior One in Wuzhou CLty, we applied the English Learning Strategies Inquiry Paper(Oxfoxd, 1993) to alt the samples. After being made "t-Test~ to make sure that they have no obvious dissimi Ian tics in English achievement and strategies level,3 experiment classes and 3 contrast classes are chosen and dovided to 3 groups. Then they are trained half a year in 3 different ways:Group instructing Method, Self-learning---3--and-discussing Method and Permeating-in-teaching Method. The thirt part------Results and Analysis.The results demonstrate that the dissimilarity in strategy training methods, sex of the samples, their original levels and training time effects the result of the training in different degrees.l.The three different training methods have got different training effects.2. In a whole, the results of short~-term or long-term training for boys or girls are all obviously better. But in thc Self-learning-and-discussing group, the result of short-term training has dissimilarity because of sex.3. In the training for students with different learning levels, the results of short-term training differ obviously while those of long-term training come about almost the same.4.The training effect depends quite a lot on the training time.The fourth part Conclusion.From the results above,we come to a conclusion that the following problems should be paid more attention to during training:1. Training with the three methods all can improve the students' English learning strategies level and achievements. But the three training methods each have their emphasis.
