Although the Missionary Universities disappeared when the People Republic of China was founded, it is important how to evaluate them as private universities? In this thesis ,the author thinks that the Missionary Universities had good impact on the curriculum arrangement,teaching methods and campus spirit of the modern native ones, and accelerated the process of modernization of education on the basis of historical materials. At the end of this thesis, the author comes up with a few of suggestions for the development for the present private education.In the preface, the author introduces the backgrounds of this subject and the present condition of it, expounds the theory value and practice value of this thesis, and points out the traits and defects in the previous study.In the first part ,the author clears up the clue of the Missionary Universities'development, summarizes their traits in different stages, and analyzes the cause of their failure, and expresses her own opinion of the Missionary Universities'prosperous stage.In the second part, the author explains that it was the missionaries worked in the native universities and the missionaries worked in their own schools that affected the curriculum arrangement ,teaching methods,teaching management system and campus spirit of the modern native higher education.In the third part, the author thinks that in the semi-colonial, semi-feudal society the Missionary Universities accelerated the native girls'education development,enforced the culture communication between the West and the East, and compares the thoughts of CaiYuanPei and John Leighton Stuart on the higher education.In the last part, the author puts forwards a few of suggestions for the problems (change of the view,raising the teaches level,lack of finance and un-perfectibility of law) in the present private education.
