To have a clear idea about the admission of master's degree program, we conducted a survey of its present status in Hunan Province. The method of multistage sampling was adopted in the survey. Totally, 692 peoples in seven universities, such as Nanhua University, took part in the survey. They included supervisors, administrators as well as both existing and prospective master students. Topics include evaluation for the procedures of application, entrance examination and matriculation, also survey on the composition of applicant, its justness and reforms, etc.Findings of the survey are listed below:There has been an increasing demand for enrollment of master's degree program. To take the limited chance, applicants have to spend most of their time and energy on preparing for entrance examination. 84% of applicants did not think that consensus letter is a necessary document when applying.Only 6% supervisors showed consensus in acceptance applicants with different background. The rate of graduate students studying in different discipline is less than that of applicants with the hope to do so. More and more master students choose to continue their Ph.D. programs in the same institute. This survey reveals that most of postgraduate students have finished all their higher education in a university. As to the entrance examination, common subjects were thought to be the most difficult subjects to pass by most of examinee. From the whole view, the difficulty of speciality subjects was thought to be moderate, even though these subjects sometime seemed to be too easy and could not reflect the knowledge broadness of subject.Whether qualified candidates can be successfully selected depends on both procedures of entrance examination and interview. With three factors, we can document the quality of admission to a degree of 69.4%. The three factors were related to entrance examination, examination for speciality subjects and interview, respectively. Supervisors always put emphasis on the whole making of applicant, also paid more and more attentions to interview.Adjustment can't eliminate the difference at all in applicant resources between universities and departments. 68.5% of the surveyed admitted that personal factor has more and more influences in the procedure of admission, thus the current admission system requires a reform (58.4%). But most of the surveyed (83%) thought it was still necessary to retain the entrance examination system at state level. Students paid more criticism on current admission system than supervisors and administrators did. Some steps towardinreform in the procedure of admission were highly supported, including test of English listening.Current admission system should strengthen its role in selecting of talent among numerous applicants. The operation ability and research ability can't be fully evaluated through this system. There is necessary to retain the acceptance of other two kinds of special applicants, because they are still the complements to main applicant resource. More efforts should be made to improve their quality. The surveyed didn't agree that government should guarantee the quality of master students recruited. 58% of the surveyed thought it should be the responsibility of universities. What government should do was just monitoring.Based on the survey of present status of master's degree program in Hunan Province, and taking the situation in China together, we bring forward following suggestions:The necessary of consensus letter and stamp from employer should be re-evaluated. The procedure of application should be simplified. Try the best to make the electronic admission practicable. Increase the times of enrollment twice or more within a year. Control the number of master students who have completed their undergraduate program at the same university and those who wish to continue their PH.D program at the same university. Grant supervisors the power to accept applicants from cross-discipline. Encourage master students to pursue their study in cross disc...
