Improving the public scientific literacy is always a major objective of education systems in all countries. As the main part of national education system, fundamental education plays an important role in improving the public scientific literacy. The "Surveys on Chinese Public Scientific Literacy" conducted by the Chinese Science Association in 2001 reveals that the general level of scientific literacy of Chinese people is not satisfying. Similar results were also obtained in the investigations on high school students' science literacy in several provinces.With the aid of sampling survey for students in high school and secondary normal school in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, the present article analyzed the current situation of their scientific literacy. The research reveals that the scientific literacy of student is generally not very good. The students have basic knowledge of science and know certain scientific method, but have little understanding on how science impacts the society. The students in secondary normal school are poorer than those in high school except that they have better understanding on basic scientific problems.Based on the investigation, the present article analyzed the problems in the education system of cultivating the scientific literacy of students, and suggested the following countermeasures: 1. Widen the resources where the students obtain scientific knowledge; 2. Deepen teaching and learning to enrich students' science knowledge; 3. Utilizing the idea of STS, improve the students' understanding on the value of science; 4. Change the teachers' understanding on scientific education, and encourage students to utilize scientific methods and form correct attitude towards science...
